Turning 30 brought with it a mix of anticipation and reflection. For someone who often grapples with time anxiety, birthdays have traditionally been a source of stress and introspection. However, this milestone feels different. There's a surprising sense of calm, confidence, and excitement about what the future holds. While thirty years might seem like a significant amount of time to younger individuals and relatively little to those older, it's been a journey rich with experiences and lessons. Here, I share some of the most valuable insights I've gained over these three decades.
1. Purpose Over Perfection
It's less about doing things perfectly and more about doing them for the right reasons. My biggest mistakes stemmed from actions driven by external expectations rather than my own desires. I've learned that genuine curiosity, a passion for learning, and a desire to connect with others are far more powerful motivators than any resume boost.
2. Embracing Multiple Lives
We often hear the phrase, "You only live once." But this isn't entirely true. We have many opportunities to reinvent ourselves. If it takes about seven years to master a skill, an 88-year-old could have 11 different careers. We can be poets, builders, researchers—whatever we choose. Embrace each new chapter of life as a unique journey.
3. Fleeting Friendships Matter
In thirty years, I've met countless people, some of whom stayed for a short while. These ephemeral friendships, whether lasting a year, a week, or even a night, have been just as transformative as long-term ones. Rather than mourning their end, I celebrate the lessons and memories they brought.
4. Everyone Has a Story
Every person you meet has something to teach you. By asking the right questions, you can uncover fascinating stories and insights. Understanding others, especially those who seem different or challenging, is an extraordinary way to grow.
5. Genuine Connections Over Networking
Traditional networking never worked for me. Authenticity and serendipity have been my guiding principles. My most significant professional opportunities often arose from genuine conversations and chance encounters rather than calculated networking efforts.
6. Creation Over Consumption
Creating—whether it's writing, drawing, or organizing events—brings more fulfillment than mere consumption. Sharing your time and ideas generously not only helps others find you but also enhances your own learning and growth.
7. The Power of Fiction
While non-fiction can be informative, fiction ignites creativity and intuition. It allows me to envision new possibilities and make unexpected connections. Science and history books are notable exceptions, as they fuel my imagination and understanding.
8. Embrace the Fear
Many of my best decisions initially felt terrifying. Moving to Tokyo, quitting my job, sharing my progress publicly—all were scary but rewarding. However, not all fear indicates a good opportunity. Listen to your instincts and discern wisely.
9. Physical Health Fuels Mental Health
Good mental health starts with taking care of your body. Simple acts like walking, sleeping well, and staying hydrated have profound effects on my mood and overall well-being. The mind and body are intricately connected.
10. Habits Shape Identity
We are defined by our habits. Instead of trying to project a certain persona, I now focus on my daily actions to shape who I am. Whether it's reading, running, or any other activity, consistency builds identity.
Turning 30 has been a profound experience, filled with reflections and realizations. These lessons are embracing the future with optimism and an open heart.
